Walter Gilbert, 92, of Syracuse, IN passed away on December 13, 2019 at Millers Merry Manor of Syracuse.  He was born on May 22, 1927 in Syracuse to James & Mary (Hendrickson) Gilbert.  He was a lifelong area resident.  He served in the US Army during both WWII as well as the Korean Conflict.  He worked for Nicolai Machine Shop, Sea Nymph, operated a Mechanic Shop in Syracuse, and served on the Syracuse Fire Department for 17 years.  He was a member of the North Webster American Legion.  He is survived by his wife of 34 years – Mildred Gilbert of Syracuse.  1 daughter – Nina (Dave) Thierer of Ft Wayne.  1 step-daughter – Vicki (Francis) Means of Syracuse.  1 step-son – Kevin (Pamala) Gilbert of Syracuse.  Many grand and great-grandchildren.  He was preceded by his first wife – Bonnie.  1 son Andrew, and 1 granddaughter Bonnie.  3 brothers and 2 sisters.  Services will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 1 PM at the Eastlund Funeral Home with calling 2 hours prior from 11-1.  Burial will follow with full military rites at the Syracuse cemetery.
