Forest A. “Bud” Smith Jr.
Forest A. “Bud” Smith Jr. 87, of Syracuse, IN passed away on April 29, 2011 at Goshen General Hospital. He was born on October 7, 1923 in Fort Wayne, IN to Forest A. & Leona Clara (Hildebrand) Smith. On February 15, 1947 he married Mary Lou Stiver who preceded him in 2007. Bud moved to the Syracuse area in 1938 coming from Fort Wayne. A WWII United States Navy Veteran, Bud belonged to the Syracuse American Legion & VFW. He retired from Aluminum Conversion Inc. 1985. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse. He was also a volunteer Red Coat at Goshen General Hospital. Bud was the first Director for the Syracuse Youth Center from 1964-1968. It was in 1968 that he was named “Top Pop” by WOWO, recognized as father of the year. Also in 1968 he was named Wawasee Flotilla Commodore. Bud is survived by his son – Michael (Pam) Smith of Millersburg. 2 granddaughters –Ms. Amanda Becker of Mishawaka & Mrs. Scott (Anne) Richey of Syracuse. 6 greatgrandchildren. 1 step brother – Don Underwood of Ligonier. He was preceded by his wife, parents, 1 brother Donald, & 2 sisters Vera Jean Rosenogle & Vella Baumbaugh. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Eastlund Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Pastor David Herr of the Calvary United Methodist church in Syracuse officiating. Burial will follow at the Syracuse Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to: Lakeland Youth Center Pre School.
