Garry Bickel
Garry Lee Bickel, age 70, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, surrounded by those he loved most, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Garry was known above all for his infectious laugh, quick wit, and rare ability to turn ordinary moments into lasting memories. A truly fun-loving man with a generous heart, he never missed an opportunity to tell a story, crack a joke, or make someone feel welcome. His presence lit up every room, and laughter followed him wherever he went.
Born on December 26, 1955, to Robert W. and Patricia Bickel, Garry grew up in Anderson, Indiana, where he developed a strong sense of loyalty, work ethic, and kindness that defined his life. He took great pride in his home and yard, and neighbors were accustomed to seeing Garry outside, washing one of his cars, tending to his lawn, or working on yet another weekend project. He believed in taking care of what you loved, and he lived that belief every day.
Garry had many passions. He was a devoted sports fan, especially when it came to Notre Dame football. He loved fishing, pontooning, and getting his hands dirty with projects around the house. Each winter, he and Rhonda escaped to their happy place in Clearwater, Florida—a place that held his heart. Their favorite spot was the beach, where Garry was most at peace, surrounded by sunshine, water, and Rhonda, the love of his life. Every year, he also looked forward to fishing trips with his lifelong friends—traditions filled with camaraderie, laughter, and stories that grew better with time.
Garry never knew a stranger. He made friends wherever he went, and people were drawn to his warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others. His unmistakable presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Garry worked for Keen Fastening Systems of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, for 20 years, proudly taking over his father’s direct sales position upon his retirement. With an authentic, personable, and trustworthy approach, Garry had the perfect personality for sales and built lasting friendships with his customers that extended far beyond business.
In 2006, Garry continued his career in sales with Gateway Screw & River where he worked for 20 years. He also spent 11 years in the service department at Main Channel Marina, a role that blended his love for the lake and boating community.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rhonda—his rock, his best friend, and the love of his life—who made it her full-time mission over the past two years to fiercely and selflessly lead his courageous fight against this devastating disease. Other survivors include his son, Joel, of Jacksonville, Florida; his cherished granddaughter, Ansley, of Florence, South Carolina, who was truly the light of his life; sister Cindy (Eric) Canaday; nephew Matt Greene; his lifelong friends also known as the Meadowbrook Mafia; and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure his memory. He will lovingly be reunited with his parents; stepson Josh Knisley; nephew Josh Greene; and best friend Pat Vanwinkle.
Anyone who knew Garry will remember him with a smile—often followed by a laugh—and with deep gratitude for having shared in his life. His legacy lives on in the countless stories told, friendships made, and love he gave so freely.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026 from 4-8 PM at Eastlund Funeral Home, and from 10 AM until Noon on Saturday, January 10th. Services will begin at noon.
Burial will be at Syracuse Cemetery.
