Joan Stoelting

After an illness of six months, Joan “Jo-ann” Elaine Stoelting, 96, died at home Sunday, January
14, 2024 with her sons and caregivers present.
She was born Feb. 3, 1927 in South Bend to Everett and Lena (Monroe) Ketering. An almost
life-long Syracuse resident, she graduated from Syracuse High School in 1945 and Warner
Beauty College, Fort Wayne. A licensed beautician, Joan had a beauty salon in her home for
many years.
She married John F. “Jack” Stoelting, May 14, 1947. As his life partner, she was co-owner of the
first bowling alley in town located in the Pickwick Block and Wawa Drive-In Theater among
other business ventures.
Joan was known as a social, outgoing person. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew’s
United Methodist Church, Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary, Junior Mothers Club, and was
Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. Hobbies she enjoyed included golf at South Shore and
Maxwelton golf clubs, bunco, and bowling.
An avid local historian with deep area roots, she was a frequent contributor to the Syracuse-
Wawasee Historical Museum’s collection.
Joan is survived by two sons, Paul A. Stoelting, and Jack K. Stoelting, two grandchildren, John
Paul Stoelting, Warsaw, and Rebecca Stoelting (Max Sayenko) Aurora, Ill., two great
grandchildren, Ivy and Pierce Sayenko and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and step parents, Everett and Lyda Ketering
and Lena and George Warner, her in-laws Otto and Esther Stoelting, sisters Jean (Chris) Koher
and Nancy (Jose) Olivares and granddaughter Sarah Stoelting.
A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19 at Eastlund Funeral Home, 7458 E 1000
N, Syracuse. Calling is one hour before the service. Memorials may be given to Syracuse-
