Leona P. Buhrt
Leona P. Buhrt, 86, of Syracuse, IN passed away Thursday, March 22, 2012 at Waterford Crossing Assisted Living Facility in Goshen. Leona was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and will be missed by all those she touched.
She was born in Warsaw, Indiana on June 12, 1925 to Wilbur and Esther (Stuart) Zimmer. Leona married Ray Buhrt in 1944. Living in the Syracuse area, Leona and Ray (deceased in 2009) were co-owners of Buhrt Builders for 40 years. Leona was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Syracuse Business and Professional Women’s Club and current member of the Syracuse Senior Mother’s Club and the Wednesday Afternoon Club. She also took great pride in her role as mentor in the Alzheimer’s Support Group at her church.
Surviving is a daughter, Joan Currier of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; sons Dennis (Jan) Buhrt, Syracuse and Mike (Sandra) Buhrt, Milford; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters Doris Boggs, Warsaw, Mary (Mel) Keplinger, Warsaw, Jean Titus, Baycliff, Texas. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Buhrt; a brother, Robert Zimmer; and a sister, Esther Wise.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 25, 2012 from 2-5 PM at the Eastlund Funeral Home, Syracuse. Services will be Monday, March 26, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Funeral Home with Pastor David Herr of the Calvary United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Milford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church or IU Goshen Hospice.
